What’s the Fuss All About?

Every market in the Netherlands has a Stroopwaffle stall and it is our mission to bring that little disc of delight to England.

For our founder, Eve, it all started back home in Gouda, the Netherlands. She longed for market day for it meant only one thing. Stroopwaffles. You could smell them as soon as you entered the market. She patiently wait and saw how they are made until she was rewarded with a fresh, hot Stroopwaffle. The treat that everyone loves from their first bite.

Where Do They Come From?

(And where do they go? Your tummy. Sorry, couldn’t help it. Dutch humour.)

They originate from the town made famous for cheese, Gouda. In the early 19th century, a Dutch baker, Pieter Willem, invented the recipe. He used leftovers to make wafers, sweetened with a thick syrup, for the poor. It wasn’t long before everyone wanted in on the action and the Stroopwaffle remains, to this very day, the most popular snack in the Netherlands. Once you taste one, you’ll understand exactly why.

What Do You Need to Know?

If it isn’t diamond cut, it isn’t a Stroopwaffle. Stroopwaffle aims to keep tradition alive with a beautiful diamond pattern impressed on every waffle. The caramel seeps into every lattice ensuring ultimate levels of deliciousness are reached. Believe us, you wouldn’t want it any other way.

People go nuts for them. King William III loved them so much that he gave them the royal seal of approval, the golden crown. From humble beginnings to the royal court, there is no place where the Stroopwaffle doesn’t succeed.

The original recipe for the waffle was sealed in an envelope since 1810 and remains a secret to this day. We think we’ve got a pretty good idea of what it says. But don’t take our word for it, try our Stroopwaffle for yourself today.
